Abundo Wealth

UI/UX Design

Summary

Abundo Wealth is a group of advice-only financial planners on a mission to transform the financial planning industry. As part of their services, clients have access to their web application, YouVest, which guides them in investing their money according to personalized investment strategies. The team at Abundo reached out to me because they knew the user interface design needed improvement and had been gathering client feedback to address these concerns. Additionally, they aimed to enhance YouVest by adding a holistic portfolio view and actionable items to help clients optimize their portfolios and manage their investments.

My goal was to design a new version of the web application, creating an intuitive and consistent user experience that empowers Abundo’s clients to efficiently invest and optimize their portfolios based on personalized strategies.

User Insights

I analyzed the feedback provided by Abundo and determined two key user insights that needed to be addressed:

01 Optimize User Interface Design

Users need an intuitive and user-friendly platform to empower them to make informed investment decisions that align with their overall financial goals.

02 Portfolio Visibility

Users need a comprehensive perspective of their portfolio and understanding of how recommended changes fit into their overall portfolio strategy.

Key Design Decisions

Landing Page

Overall, the design is intended to be light, airy, and fun, aligning with Abundo’s goals for the application. It features a simple, user-friendly page layout. Key design elements include:

  • Updated navigation with side primary navigation and secondary top navigation for improved orientation;

  • Action center notifications to guide the user to take necessary actions;

  • Portfolio summary, categorized by accounts compatible with YouVest;

  • A pie chart providing current portfolio allocations compared to recommendations; and

  • Portfolio statistics enabling users to view historic performance and key statistics.

Invest

With clients’ pain points in mind, key design elements of the invest page include:

  • Presenting one transaction per page to avoid overwhelming users with information;

  • Ensuring a clear indication of status and progress through use of a status bar and notation such as “Transaction X of Y” on the transaction card; and

  • Integrating a tutorial on the right-hand side, offering resources on how to execute trades and understanding the rationale behind the recommendations.

Summary

To address client feedback, key design choices include:

  • A transaction summary presented before exiting the investment tool, allowing users to thoroughly review their transactions;

  • A fee savings report, illustrating estimated fee savings over time, providing valuable financial insights; and

  • Upon completion, a “Return to Portfolio” button is seamlessly integrated to guide users back to the Landing Page.

Typography

Helvetica Neue was chosen for its modern, professional, and clear design. Its clean and legible design enhances readability, instilling a visual confidence that aligns with the precision and trustworthiness expected in financial services. The font’s timeless aesthetic also ensures a polished and contemporary appearance, contributing to a positive and trustworthy user experience.

Final Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with the team at Abundo on this project. The team opted to proceed directly to the development phase and address any potential design issues afterward. As the project is currently in development, it presents an opportunity for user testing and design iteration to further refine and enhance the application. By integrating user feedback and iterating on the design based on testing results, my goal is to create an optimal user experience that meets the needs and preferences of Abundo’s clients.
